Trans-Mongolian RR

Route MapThe Classic Trans-Mongolia Railway is 2500kim / 1553mi long. It was built between 1949 – 1961 to connect Russia, Mongolia and China. In Russia, the road branches in Eastern Siberia from Ulan-Ude city on Lake Baikal and goes straight south through Mongolia to Jining city of northern China. In Mongolia the road passes Ulaanbaatar city and other important towns such as Sukhbaatar, Darkhan, Choir, and Zamyn-Uud (Erenhot). Rich deposits of color metals, coal, gold keep the road busy. The cargo accounts for 80% of all traffic. The road remains a major transport artery for Mongolia’s economy, while for travelers it is more known as the shortcut from Siberia to China. In Mongolia, most of the route lies in endless Mongolian steppes and the Gobi desert in the south.

HIGHLIGHTS:

This trip covers 3 countries. Travelers start in Moscow or Beijing and make stops in Irkutsk and Ulaanbaatar cities. During the trip, you will experience several major geographical and cultural parts of Eurasia: the European Russia, Ural Mountains, Siberia, Mongolia, and China. We recommend to stay at least 1 night in each city. The images of booming capitals, clean waters and mountains of Lake Baikal, sand dunes of Gobi desert are impressive. Moscow offers great sightseeing and cultural experience. Check Diamond Fund of Russia in Moscow, Moscow Circus, Bolshoi Theater, Tretyakov Gallery, take a day tour into the country to see Russia’s Golden Ring towns, or take a speed train to St. Petersburg for a day or two. The stop at Irkutsk city will give you a break from a long train ride, but most important, it will show you that Siberia is not just about cold and exile. Irkutsk city is one of the oldest cities in Siberia with great history and cultural presence. We recommend staying at least 2 nights in Irkutsk. The closest lake point from the city is Listvyanka village (70km). Spending a night in Listvyanka is a great way to experience the Lake and Siberia’s countryside. In Ulaanbaatar city, check the city, souvenir markets and Mongolian countryside. Take a day tour to Terelj National Park, or stay there overnight in Mongolian Ger (Yurt) camp. Beijing speaks for itself. It really depends what you like to do starting from Forbidden City to the Great Wall, and more. Along with daily tours and activities, we can also help you with accommodations, visa services, transfers, and flights (see “related tours” below)
